Inherited from Proto-Turkic *č(i)akmak (firestriker), a development of *č(i)ak- (to hit, strike), whence چاقمق (çakmak, to hit, strike). Cognate with Azerbaijani çaxmaq and Uyghur چاقماق (chaqmaq).
