Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀙𑀺𑀧𑁆𑀧 (chippa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓𑁆𑀓- (-kka-) + -𑀮- (-la-) + -𑀇𑀓𑀸- (-ikā-), from Sanskrit शेप्या (śepyā́, tail), a feminine form of शेप (śépa), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *šáypas. Cognate with Marathi शेपटी (śepṭī), शेपूट (śepūṭ), Konkani शेंपडी (śempḍī).
