Inherited from Prakrit खज्जूर m (khajjūra), खज्जूरी f (khajjūrī), from Sanskrit खर्जूर m (kharjūra), खर्जूरी f (kharjūrī). Cognate with Gujarati ખજૂર (khajūr), Hindustani کَھجُور (khajūr) / खजूर (khajūr), Marathi खजूर (khajūr), Bengali খেজুর (khejur), Assamese খেজুৰ (khezur).
