EtymologyEdit

From Middle Persian TWRAmyš(gāw-mēš, literally cow-sheep); compare Persian گاو(gâv, cow) and میش(mêš, ewe) for the constituents.

The Iranian word has been borrowed all over the Orient: compare Old Armenian գոմէշ(gomēš), Classical Syriac ܓܡܘܫܐ(gāmōšā), Arabic جاموس(jāmūs), Georgian გამეში(gameši), კამეჩი(ḳameči), კამბეჩი(ḳambeči), Chechen гомаш(gomaš), Ossetian къамбец(k’ambec).
