Etymology edit

From Middle Persian OLYKWN-tn', wlyhtn' (wirēxtan), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wi (apart) + *leykʷ- (to leave); whence also ریختن (rixtan, to pour). Cognate with Avestan 𐬬𐬌𐬭𐬁𐬈𐬗 (virāec, leave away, run away), Gilaki وروتن (vörütən) (present stem وروج (vörüj)).

    the fighters of Turan couldn’t fight any longer, and they started to run away.

Usage notes edit

This verb is not used in colloquial Tehrani speech, where the verb در رفتن (dar raftan) is used instead. Some other dialects such as Shirazi use گوروختن (guruxtan, gǔruxtan) in colloquial speech. Use the verb or other forms of it but mostly in the past and perfect tenses.
