Inherited from Prakrit 𑀳𑁂𑀭𑀇 (heraï), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀳𑁂𑀭𑀢𑀺 (*herati). Cognate with Gujarati હેરવું (hervũ), Hindustani ہیرْنَا (hernā) / हेरना (hernā), Marwari हेरणौ (herṇau) / 𑅱𑅓𑅭𑅢𑅒 (herṇu), Marathi हेरणे (herṇe), Nepali हेर्नु (hernu), Maithili हेरब (hērab) / 𑒯𑒺𑒩𑒥 (heraba), Odia ହେରିବା (heribā), Bengali হেরা (hera), Assamese হেৰ (her).
