editInherited from Old Marathi 𑘁𑘩𑘹𑘽 (āleṃ), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀆𑀕𑀅 (āgaa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀮𑁆𑀮- (-lla-) + -𑀓- (-ka-)[1] (compare 𑀆𑀕𑀏𑀮𑁆𑀮𑀺𑀆 f (āgaelliā)[2]), from Sanskrit आगत (ā́gata). Cognate with Hindi आया (āyā), Punjabi ਆਇਆ (āiā) / آیا.
