From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Húćyati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Húčyati, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁úk-ye-ti, from *h₁ewk- (to be accustomed). Cognate with Lithuanian jùnkti (to learn), Old Church Slavonic оучити (učiti), Gothic 𐌱𐌹𐌿𐌷𐍄𐍃 (biūhts, accustomed to), Old Armenian ուսանիմ (usanim, to learn).
