Etymology
editFrom Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hućitás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hučitás, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁uk-i-tós, from *h₁ewk- (“to be accustomed”). Cognate with Lithuanian jùnkti (“to learn”), Old Church Slavonic оучити (učiti), Gothic 𐌱𐌹𐌿𐌷𐍄𐍃 (biūhts, “accustomed to”), Old Armenian ուսանիմ (usanim, “to learn”). The Sanskrit root is उच् (uc).
