Etymology

edit

Of uncertain origin. Possibly an extended form of the root कन् (kan), from Proto-Indo-European *ken-d- (to press, pinch, squeeze), but formal cognates are few and controversial: compare Ancient Greek κονδός (kondós), κόνδυλος (kóndulos, knob, knot, joint) (now thought to be Pre-Greek substrate borrowings) and Lithuanian kánduolas (kernel (of grain)).[1] May be ultimately sound-symbolic.
