किंचिद् (kiṃcid)

  1. anything (see किम् (kim) for more)

Declension

edit

This entry needs an inflection-table template.

Equivalent to the declension of किम् (kim) + the indeclinable particle चिद् (cid). In particular, note the masculine singular कश्चिद् (kaścid), masculine plural केचिद् (kecid).

Descendants

edit

Descendants show either partial collision with कोऽपि (koʼpi) (from किम् (kim) +‎ अपि (api)) or reanalysis by compounding the descendant forms of किम् (kim) with the descendant forms of चिद् (cid). For example, this is why the Pali masculine singular is koci (from ko +‎ ci) rather than *kacchi.

Ashokan Prakrit does attest -(c)ch- (< Sanskrit -śc-) in one form, but this doesn't appear in the Dramatic Prakrits. Yet, New Indo-Aryan has many forms appearing to have derived from Prakrit words with -(c)ch- (particularly in place of attested -ṃc-), implying that such forms continued to be spoken.
