Semi-learned borrowing from Sanskrit क्रयाणक (krayāṇaka, “goods for sale”) through Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀓𑀺𑀆𑀡𑀕 (kiāṇaga), from क्री (krī, “to buy”), from Proto-Indo-European *kʷreyh₂- (“to buy”).
