Etymology 1

Inherited from Prakrit *𑀖𑀽𑀲𑁆𑀲𑀸 (*ghūssā, “a present”). Compare Punjabi ਘੂਸ (ghūs), Kumaoni घूस, Nepali घूस (ghūs), Bengali ঘুষ (ghuś), ঘুস (ghus) and Odia ଘୁସ୍ (ghus).
