Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀚𑀮𑀡 (jalaṇa), from Sanskrit ज्वलन (jvalaná). Compare जलना (jalnā, “to burn”). Cogante with Gujarati જળણ (jaḷṇa), Marathi जळण (jaḷaṇ), and Rajasthani जळण (jaḷaṇ).
