Etymology
editProbably from an unattested *तृपु (tṛpu), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *trap-u (“lightweight, unsteady”), owing to tin's ductile nature (compare Persian سبک (sabok, “lightweight, flimsy”)), from Proto-Indo-European *trep- (“to turn, bow the head (in shame), tremble”), and connected with the root त्रप् (trap, “to be ashamed or abashed”), Latin trepidus (“nervous, perilous”), and Lithuanian trapùs (“brittle, delicate”). Arguments for a substrate origin are less likely due to the word's Vedic presence.
