From Sanskrit धन्य (dhanya, “auspicious, blessed, lucky”) + वाद (vāda, “speech”). Compare with Bengali ধন্যবাদ (dhônnôbad) and Hindustani धन्यवाद (dhanyavād) / دھنیہ واد (dhanyavād).
