editFrom Proto-Indo-European *néptih₂ (“niece, granddaughter, female descendant”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬥𐬀𐬞𐬙𐬍 (naptī, “granddaughter”), Old English nift (“niece, granddaughter”), Latin neptis (“granddaughter”), Irish neacht (“niece”). See also नप्ति (naptí).
