From Proto-Indo-European *néptih₂ (niece, granddaughter, female descendant). Cognate with Avestan 𐬥𐬀𐬞𐬙𐬍 (naptī, granddaughter), Old English nift (niece, granddaughter), Latin neptis (granddaughter), Irish neacht (niece). See also नप्ति (naptí).
