From Proto-Indo-European *powH-éye-ti - (to purify), from *pewH-. Cognate with Old High German fowen (to sieve; clean grain). Also related to Avestan 𐬞𐬏𐬌𐬙𐬌𐬐𐬀 (itika), Old Irish ūr (new, fresh), Latin putus, pūrus (pure).
