Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀨𑀼𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀸 (phukkā), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀨𑁄𑀓𑁆𑀓 (*phokka, “hollow”), from a substrate language. Cognate with Marathi फुकट (phukaṭ), Gujarati ફોગટ (phogaṭ), Bengali ফোকট (phōkoṭ).
