Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀯𑀸𑀲𑀸𑀭𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀺 (vāsāratti), from Sanskrit वर्षारात्रि (varṣārātri, “the rainy season”). Related to बरस (baras).
