Inherited from Prakrit *𑀩𑀳𑀺𑀡𑀻𑀯𑀼𑀢𑁆𑀢 (*bahiṇīvutta) (by metathesis), *𑀪𑀇𑀡𑀻𑀯𑀼𑀢𑁆𑀢 (*bhaïṇīvutta) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit भगिनीपुत्र (bhaginīputra). Cognate with Kashmiri ब्यनथ्र् (byanathr, sister's son).
