Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀫𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀻 (maṭṭī), from Sanskrit मृत्तिका (mṛttikā). Doublet of मिट्टी (miṭṭī). Compare Gujarati માટી (māṭī), Marathi माती (mātī).
