Probably borrowed from Classical Persian مدعی/مدعا (mudda'ā), from Arabic مُدَّعَى (muddaʕā, claimed), from the root د ع و (d ʕ w). Compare Punjabi ਮੁੱਦਾ (muddā) / مُدَّعا (muddaʻā), Gujarati મુદ્દો (muddo), Marathi मुद्दा (muddā).
