Etymology

Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘥𑘜𑘼𑘡𑘲 (bhaṇaunī), 𑘦𑘿𑘮𑘜𑘄𑘡𑘳 (mhaṇaunu), 𑘦𑘿𑘮𑘜𑘼𑘡𑘲 (mhaṇaunī), 𑘦𑘿𑘮𑘜𑘼𑘡𑘲𑘧𑘰 (mhaṇaunīyā),[1] from:

the verb 𑘥𑘜𑘜𑘹 (bhaṇaṇe), 𑘦𑘿𑘮𑘜𑘜𑘹 (mhaṇaṇe, to say) + the absolutive ending 𑘄𑘡𑘳 (unu), 𑘍𑘡𑘲 (aunī), 𑘍𑘡𑘲𑘧𑘰 (aunīyā).

By surface analysis, म्हणणे (mhaṇṇe, to say) +‎ -ऊन (-ūn, absolutive/completive marker and subordinating conjunction). Related to म्हणजे (mhaṇje). Cognate with Konkani म्हणून (mhaṇūn).
