Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘪𑘰𑘯𑘜𑘹 (vāḷaṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀯𑀸𑀮𑀇 (vālaï), 𑀯𑀸𑀮𑁂𑀇 (vālei). Related to वळणे (vaḷṇe), वाळू (vāḷū, sand). Compare Gujarati વાળવું (vāḷvũ), Sindhi وارَڻُ / वारणु.
