Inherited from Old Marathi शोकणे (śokaṇe), शोखणे (śokhaṇe), सुकणे (sukaṇe), सोकणे (sokaṇe), सोसणे (sosaṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀲𑀼𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀇 (sukkaï), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *śuṣkati. Compare Hindi सूखना (sūkhnā).
