editFrom earlier सांखळी (sāṅkhḷī), from Prakrit 𑀲𑀁𑀓𑀮𑀺𑀆 (saṃkaliā) (with Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀇𑀓𑀸- (-ikā-)), from Sanskrit शृङ्खल (śṛṅkhala, “chain”). Cognate with Marathi साखळी (sākhḷī), Ahirani साकयी (sākyī).
