Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘮𑘰𑘎 (hāka), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀳𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀸 (hakkā), from Sanskrit हक्क (hakka, “calling to an elephant”). Cognate with Gujarati હાંક (hā̃k), Hindustani ہَان٘ک (hā̃k) / हाँक (hā̃k).
