Inherited from Middle Bengali *কবি (*kobi), borrowed from Portuguese couve (cabbage), from Latin caulis (stalk, stem). Cognate with Assamese কবি (kobi), Hindi गोभी (gobhī), Punjabi ਗੋਭੀ (gobhī), Marathi कोबी (kobī), Manipuri ꯀꯣꯕꯤ (kobee).
