Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀓𑀇𑀝𑁆𑀞 (kaïṭṭha, wood apple), from Sanskrit কপিত্থ (kapittha).[1] Doublet of কপিত্থ (kopittho). Compare Odia କଇଥ (kaitha), Nepali कैँथ् (ka͠ith), Hindi कैथ (kaith), Gujarati કૌઠ (kauṭh), Punjabi ਕੈਂਥ (kainth).
