Etymology

edit

Inherited from Middle Bengali চারি (cari), from Magadhi Apabhramsa 𑖓𑖯𑖨𑖰 ~ 𑖓𑖿𑖧𑖯𑖨𑖰 (cāri ~ cyāri), from Magadhi Prakrit *𑀘𑀬𑀸𑀭𑀺 (*cayāri), from earlier *𑀘𑀢𑀸𑀭𑀺 (*catāri), from even earlier 𑀘𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀸𑀭𑀺 (cattāri) with abnormal degemination (possibly due to influence of the accusative चतुरः (caturaḥ) and/or other non-geminated cases), from Sanskrit চত্বারি (catvā́ri), the neuter form of চত্বারঃ (catvā́raḥ), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *čatwā́ras, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷetwóres.
