Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀝𑀼𑀓𑁆𑀓𑁆 (*ṭukk, to cut, break) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀟- (-ḍa-) + -𑀓- (-ka-). Cognate with Assamese টুকুৰা (tukura), Hindi टुकड़ा (ṭukṛā), Tamil துக்கடா (tukkaṭā), Malayalam തുക്കട (tukkaṭa).
