Inherited from Prakrit 𑀟𑀼𑀩𑁆𑀩𑀇 (ḍubbaï, to sink), metathesized from 𑀩𑀼𑀟𑁆𑀟𑀇 (buḍḍaï), from Sanskrit बुड्यति (buḍyati), possibly of onomatopoeic origin. Doublet of বুড় (buṛ).
