Etymology edit

Borrowed from Classical Persian نوبت (nawbat), which is derived from Arabic نَوْبَة (nawba, turn, shift). Cognate with Armenian նոպա (nopa), Maltese newba, French nouba and Turkish nöbet.

Noun edit

নওবৎ (nôubôt) (objective নওবৎ (noōbot) or নওবৎকে (noōbotke), genitive নওবতের (noōboter), locative নওবতে (noōbote))

  1. A large round drum for making a special sound at the monarch's door every morning and evening or every hour.
  2. Sophisticated harmony of sanai etc.; Dunduvi or Badya.
