Borrowed from Classical Persian پنیر (panīr), from Middle Persian pnyl, which is ultimately from the Proto-Iranian verbal root *nayH- (to churn butter) with the preverb *pati-. The Iranian root is from Proto-Indo-Iranian *nayH- (to churn butter). Doublet of নবনী (noboni), meaning fresh butter. Cognate with Armenian պանիր (panir), Assamese পনীৰ (ponir), Turkmen peýnir, Turkish peynir, Hindi पनीर (panīr), Gujarati પનીર (panīr), Punjabi ਪਨੀਰ (panīr).
