Etymology

Inherited from Middle Bengali বাছৌর (bachōur) with syncope, from Old Bengali *বাছরু (bācharu) with metathesis, from Prakrit *𑀯𑀘𑁆𑀙𑀭𑀽𑀯 (*vaccharūva), from Sanskrit *वत्सरूप (vatsarūpa, literally calf-shaped), from वत्स (vatsa, calf) +‎ रूप (rūpa, shape). Cognate with Assamese বাছৰু (basoru), Odia ବାଛୁରି (bāchuri), Bihari बछ्रु (bachru), Gujarati વાછ્રું (vāchrũ), Marathi वास्रूं (vāsrū̃), Konkani वास्रुं (vāsrũ).
