Borrowed from Sanskrit स्थान (sthāna), with a religiously elevated sense. Compare derived Punjabi doublets ਥਾਣ (thāṇa, “place”) and ਥਾਣਾ (thāṇā) or ਠਾਣਾ (ṭhāṇā, “place, police station”).
