Etymology

Inherited from Prakrit 𑀝𑀁𑀓 (ṭaṃka, ditch, reservoir), of uncertain further origin.[1] Has been linked to Sanskrit तडाग (taḍāga, pond) (whence તળાવ (taḷāv, pond, cistern)), though this seems spurious.[2]
