Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀲𑁂𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀤𑀺 (*sekkadi), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀲𑁂𑀓𑀢𑀺 (*sekati). Cognate with Hindustani سینکْنَا / सेंकना (sẽknā), Marathi शेकणे (śekṇe), Sindhi سيڪَڻُ / सेकणु, سيڪو / सेको, سيڪُ / सेकु, Punjabi ਸੇਕਣਾ (sekṇā) / سیکݨا (sekṇā), Nepali सेक्नु (seknu), Odia ସେକିବା (sekiba), ସେକା (seka), Bengali সেকা (śeka), Assamese সেকা (xeka).
