Borrowed from Classical Persian سفید (safēd), from earlier سپید (sapēd), from Middle Persian spyt' (/⁠spēd⁠/, white), from Proto-Iranian *cwaytáh, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćwaytás, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱweytos (bright; shine). Compare Hindi सफ़ेद (safed).
