Inherited from Old Tamil 𑀈𑀵𑀫𑁆 (īḻam), from Proto-Dravidian *īẓam (“toddy”). Cognate with Malayalam ഈഴം (īḻaṁ, “toddy, Sri Lanka”), Kannada ಈಡಿ (īḍi, “toddy”) and Telugu ఈడిగ (īḍiga, “toddy tapping caste”).
