Etymology

Of obscure origin. C.P. Brown considers the word as borrowed from French étape (stage, stop), while Wilson assigns it a native Dravidian origin. Beames and Platts, on the other hand, consider the word to be borrowed from Indo-Aryan *टप्पाल (ṭapāl, post office, i.e. place where letters are stamped), from the root underlying टापना (ṭāpnā, to stamp, pound one's feet) + आलय (ālay, place, dwelling), lit. a "stamping-house".
