Etymology

Inherited from Old Kannada ಪೇೞು (pēḻu), from Proto-Dravidian *pēẓ- (to speak). Cognate with Tamil பேசு (pēcu), Telugu పేలు (pēlu).

  1. To say
    ಸಂಜಯ ಹೇಳಿದನು: ಆಗ ದೊರೆಯಾದ ದುರ್ಯೋಧನ ಸಜ್ಜುಗೊಂಡ ಪಾಂಡವರ ಪಡೆಯನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ಆಚಾರ್ಯನತ್ತ ನಡೆದು ಮಾತಾಡಿದನು.
    sañjaya hēḷidanu: āga doreyāda duryōdhana sajjugoṇḍa pāṇḍavara paḍeyannu kaṇḍu ācāryanatta naḍedu mātāḍidanu.
    Sañjaya said: At that time, King Duryōdhana after seeing the army of the Pāṇḍavas arranged in military phalanx approaching near his respected preceptor Drōṇācārya spoke these words.
  2. To tell
    ನನಗೆ ನಿಜ ಹೇಳು!
    nanage nija hēḷu!
    Tell me the truth!
    ನನ್ನ ಮಗನು ತುಂಬ ಒಳ್ಳೇ ಕಥೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ.
    nanna maganu tumba oḷḷē kathegaḷannu hēḷuttāne.
    My son tells very good stories.
