Inherited from Proto-Dravidian *pōẓ. Cognate with Kannada ಹೊತ್ತು (hottu, “time period, sun”), Kolami పొద్ద్ (podd, “sun”), Gondi పోడ్ద్ (pōḍd, “sun”), Tamil பொழுது (poḻutu, “time, sun”), Telugu ప్రొద్దు (proddu, “sun”) and Tulu ಪೊರ್ತ್ (portŭ, “time, sun”).
