Borrowed from Classical Syriac ܝܽܘܚܢܳܢ (yoḥanan), from Hebrew יוֹחָנָן, from יהוה (YHWH) + חנון (Khanon); literally (roughly), “God is gracious”. Doublet of ഷോൺ (ṣōṇ), ജുവാൻ (juvāṉ), ഹുവാൻ (huvāṉ), ഇവാൻ (ivāṉ), ഐവൻ (aivaṉ), ജീൻ (jīṉ), ജിയോവാനി (jiyōvāni), and ജോൺ (jōṇ).
