From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ˀduːtᴰ¹ᴸ (to suck). Cognate with Lao ດູດ (dūt), ᦡᦳᧆᧈ (ḋud¹), Shan လုတ်ႇ (lùt) and ႁုတ်ႇ (hùt), Tai Nüa ᥘᥧᥖᥴ (lút), Phake ꩫုတ် (nut, to smoke) and ꩭုတ် (hut, to suck), Ahom 𑜓𑜤𑜄𑜫 (dut), Nong Zhuang ndut or ndit.
