From Proto-Southwestern Tai *numᴮ² (“soft; tender”). Cognate with Lao ນຸ່ມ (num), Lü ᦐᦳᧄᧈ (ṅum¹) or ᦷᦓᧄᧈ (nom¹), Shan ၼုမ်ႇ (nùm), Ahom *𑜃𑜤𑜪 (*nuṃ).
