Etymology

The term is composed of เสียง (sǐiang) +‎ ลือ (lʉʉ) +‎ เสียง (sǐiang) +‎ เล่า (lâo) +‎ อ้าง (âang), literally meaning “spreading voices, telling voices”.

It is from the first paragraph of the thirtieth stanza of the 15th-century epic poem, Lilit Phra Lo (ลิลิตพระลอ), which says:
