From Proto-Southwestern Tai *siəmꟲ¹ (“to sharpen to a point”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩈ᩠ᨿ᩶ᨾ, Khün ᩈ᩠ᨿ᩶ᨾ, Lao ສ້ຽມ (sīam), Lü ᦵᦉᧄᧉ (ṡem²), Shan သဵမ်ႈ (sāem), Tai Nüa ᥔᥥᥛᥲ (sèm), Phake ꩬိမ် (sim), Ahom *𑜏𑜢𑜉𑜫 (*sim).
