From Proto-Southwestern Tai *sɯəᴬ (tiger). Cognate with Thai เสือ (sʉ̌ʉa), Northern Thai ᩈᩮᩬᩥᩋ, Khün ᩈᩮᩬᩧ, ᦵᦉᦲ (ṡoe), Tai Dam ꪹꪎ, Shan သိူဝ် (sǒe), Tai Nüa ᥔᥫᥴ (sóe), Aiton ꩬိုဝ် (süw), Ahom 𑜏𑜢𑜤𑜈𑜫 (süw) or 𑜏𑜢𑜤𑜰𑜫 (sü0).
